GRA welcomes new bill which seeks to tackle land acquisition

Global Rights Alert a Civil Society NGO has received the Land Acquisition Bill with open hands. GRA hopes that if the Land Acquisition Bill 2013 is passed into law, it will have significant implications in the acquisition of land throughout the country and also on the Oil regions where there have been constant reports of unfair land acquisition.

The Land Acquisition Bill 2013 which will seek to amend, replace and reform the law relating to compulsory acquisition of land.

The discovery of oil in 2006 saw cases of land grabbing escalate in the Albertine region with many locals complaining of unfair displacement. Oil exploration and production activities such as the construction of the oil refinery have also seen many people lose their original land with little or no compensation at all.

GRA has explicitly received and heard such complaints and we hope that land conflicts significantly reduce once the bill is passed into law.
