Religious leaders complete advocacy training on oil
A group of senior religious leaders from the Albertine Region converged in Hoima District on the 28th of October 2013, for a 2 day training on advocacy and lobbying in the oil and gas sector.The meeting which was facilitated by Global Rights Alert (GRA) and their partners, the Inter Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU), drew 40 participants from the Muslim, Anglican, Catholic, Seventh Day Adventist as well as Pentecostal denominations from the oil producing regions.
Presenters included the renowned Nigerian oil rights activist, Fr.Dr. Edward Obi, who is the Executive Secretary of the Niger Delta Catholic Bishop’s Forum in Nigeria as well as Bishop Steven Munga, who is a member of the Tanzania Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative.
Participants were very motivated by their presentations and commended GRA and IRCU for their effort in improving the knowledge and capacity of religious leaders to enable them partake in the national debate on oil and Gas. Lead Facilitator, Adolf Mbaine, a lecturer at the Makerere University took the leaders through the basics as well as made them appreciate the importance of acquiring advocacy and lobbying skills.
